The collection consists of papers of Henry B. Mitchell and the Mitchell family from 1871-1960. The bulk of the collection (1877-1891) contains correspondence from Hattie G. Hart (Mitchell) of Colebrook, Connecticut to Henry B. Mitchell of Athens, Georgia. The letters mainly detail their courtship, relationship, and news of friends and family. The collection also includes bills, correspondence, receipts, and reports relating to Mitchell's duties as a statistical correspondent for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for Clarke County (Ga.), Mitchell's publication of various articles for the Practical Farmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) and with the Phelps Publishing Company (Springfield, Mass.), and Mitchell's donations to and involvement with the Thornwell Orphanage (Clinton, S.C.).
